Settle: Puget sound seen from Whidbey Island shifts in color, intensity and direction many times each day. I filmed the same body of water at 3 different times on the same day placing them next to each other to create a portrait of place, a point on the planet to see the ocean mirror. The piece indulges our desire to gaze at water and watch video to both soothe and satisfy attention.
The three screens, difficult to take in at once, let the viewer direct focus. We know instantly what is happening on each screen. No surprises, reveals – just going and going. There is not stress of missing out. Each screen goes dark for one out of each eight minutes, telling us not to worry, narrowing choice. Nothing happens except the water flowing, and flowing. Familiar, known and everyday understandable, yet each ripple a conversation with weather and moon, each shimmer a dance with the sun. The mystery of why we are here, what live is hidden and revealed in every curl.
